Divided we cannot stand
Shame, blame, defame. Thats the mantra of 2020. If you are not for something, some ideal, some persuasion or some belief, then you are shamed. You are blamed for being insensitive, uneducated, uniformed, ignorant, a "Karen", a conspiracy theorist, a zealot, and the list could go on. Mostly you are defamed. Your are an outcast regardless of which 'side' you are on and that can sometimes even mean, defamed and irreversibly divided amongst even those closest to you.
When did we as a country, the U. S. A., become so divided? Policies and laws presented a pathway for health, freedoms, and togetherness merely created a deeper and wider chasm in a what once was a great nation. One Nation, Under God.
That nation no longer exists.
This generations national definition is one nation under love. And a total misrepresentation of the what that word means.
Today's Nations definition of love is an intense feeling of deep affection...with no context or direction at who or what. What does that even mean? I really REALLY like a person, a place, a belief, a philosophy? What is the context and what are the limits?
A redefined nation's definition of love says to love means you accept, embrace, agree with the feeling, philosophy or movement du jour, or you are a hater.
States, Cities, & individuals are now divided by conflict and heated disagreements. The desire to be right at the expense of another. There is no compromise, no listening or hearing. Only debate, arguing and slander.
One Nation Under God means a reliance on a viewpoint and context that is higher, broader and deeper than our minds can comprehend. One Nation Under God means to look to someone greater than ourselves to give perspective and context. God's definition of Love is - "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
That doesn't describe our nation today. Nor does it describe most proclaiming Christians today. It is one thing to live in a country divided, it is quite another to live amongst fellow followers of Christ and be divided.
A nation divided against itself cannot stand. Abraham Lincoln said this on June 16, 1858:
"A house divided against itself, cannot stand.
I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other.
Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."
Jesus said “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand." - Matthew 12:25
"States don't fail overnight. The seeds of of their destruction are sown deep within their political institutions." - ForeignPolicy.com
Lincoln was talking about racism and slavery, but we have a new form of the very thing. Insert, any divided issue today in the place of the word Slavery and you will see, we have not changed as a nation. The only difference is Lincoln was trying to end inequality within humanity. Today we are trying to create equality at the expense of humanity.
Why? Because we refuse to be a Nation under authority of the one who created it. When left to our devices we will destroy ourselves, and destroy it the redefined name of love, which is not love at all but masqueraded hate.
So where is the hope? The hope is where it always has been. In Christ alone.
"if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14
