Do you see me?

"Communication is not merely talking…it’s listening, seeing, and being invested." - Unknown
It's so easy to assume we know someone just because of a random few encounters. We hear often people say, when they see a child who is now an adult, 'oh, you're all grown up, I remember when you used to...'
I think we can be inclined to do the same thing with people we haven't been around or invested in communication with. We assume they are the same person they used to be, as if time somehow freezes them into some image - good or bad. But people are not always the same.
Growth, transformation and even miracles as well as pain and devastation, happen despite our assumptions. If you knew someone who had it all together or were wounded years ago, and you haven't connected with them to really know who they are today, don't assume you know them at all.
Time doesn't stand still just because our image of others has. Get to know who they really are today before you speak. Make time to communicate and connect. You might pleasantly find a treasure under the rubble of your assumptions or a soul in trouble, needing a loving word.
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'” - 1st Samuel 16:7
